Berkey water filters filter out more than 99.9% of chlorine, viruses, bacteria, cysts, drug residues, parasites and dangerous chemical contaminants. The Royal Berkey water filter comes with 2 original Black Berkey filter elements and can be extended to four elements. After 14 days of using the Berkey Royal, I can say that I find it and top device. Lovely soft water that I easily drink 3 litres a day from. Hopefully I will be doing this for many years to come.

At the end of last year, I bought this set. Before doing so, had extensive contact with the seller as I had quite a few practical questions. These were answered very patiently and at length and really fine advice given.
Fine personal attention the salespeople know where they are going. For service a big 5! Also a personal card with the package when it was delivered, that personal touch makes it complete.
Back to the device. I give that one 4 stars because, in my view, it still has some design flaws. Therefore, a 4 star and not a 5.
- the upper part there always remains a bottom of unfiltered water. Simple modification with something like double bottom would solve this very simply. That means that when you refill, you always have older water, which you have to throw out once anyway. Extra action every time you want to top up.
- lower part you cannot empty completely. The tap is higher than the bottom, so old water remains here too if you don't empty this. Simple modification in the design could prevent this.
- So to get the last "bit" (which is easily over a litre) out, you actually have to take off the upper part and manually empty the lower part. Another option is to tilt the whole thing and leave the tap open, but believe me, that is not recommended. Also no idea whether this is good for the filters so that's why I don't do the latter.
- the water is not chilled of course. We were used to tapping cold water directly from the American fridge. That won't work here. Solution to make large ice cubes ourselves and add them to lower section. The latter works fine, but also requires extra handling. Tip, use large ice cubes, small ones melt much faster.
- For that money, you would expect the stainless steel tap to be included as standard, unfortunately this has to be bought separately. Unbelievable that they still sell this with a plastic tap....
- priming was tricky with the cap, what a fiddle. I ended up doing it with the primer tool I bought with it. That took me hours, probably because of my clumsiness. It was a bit of a struggle, unfortunately. Fortunately, everything works fine now.
I give the filtered water a big 5, and would not want to go back to unfiltered water. Build quality is also super, I give that a 5 as well.
Further considerations:
- sight glass is unnecessary in my view because , as the advice was also, you can quickly sense how much is left in the reservoir. This is right! I didn't take this one either. Also because then you were stuck with a plastic tap.
- I did include a stainless steel tap, and that is a no brainer. I would always replace the original plastic tap for this
- the holder is incredibly handy, makes filling your glass easy. Costs a bit more but is very practical.
I am now waiting for the berkey go until those come back in stock, because for holidays or on the road, I want to be able to filter easily. Hope those become available again soon.

Lovely soft and flavourful water. I don't want anything else! The difference is really noticeable. Everyone who tastes it is amazed at the lovely smooth taste. Even my grandchildren now only want to drink "Granny Water" 😉
And you can't fool small children anyway, so they really taste the difference.
I now drink nothing else, and so use this water for coffee ( better taste), tea (better taste) and cooking as well.
