Berkey water filters filter out more than 99.9% of chlorine, viruses, bacteria, cysts, drug residues, parasites and dangerous chemical contaminants. Heavy metals are filtered out for 95% (up to 100% even with fluoride and arsenic filters). This preserves the essential minerals your body needs.

These filter elements use the latest technological advances in water purification. Berkey water filters are therefore considered the best and most durable water filtration systems on the market and are the best-performing portable water filters.
The Berkey water filter comes standard with 2 original Black Berkey filter elements. You can of course order these separately to expand your Berkey water filter to 4, 6 or 8 filter elements, if required. So even if your current elements need replacing, these can be ordered separately.
The Black Berkey water filter elements are one of the best gravity filter elements in the world. Berkey systems with these elements remove far more than standard water filters. A sturdy carbon block made from natural coconut shell, the micropores in the Black Berkey elements are so small that bacteria simply cannot pass through them. They are also so powerful that they can remove red dyes from water without removing the beneficial minerals your body needs.
The Black Berkey filter elements also remove or reduce viruses, pathogenic cysts, parasites, harmful or unwanted chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides, VOCs, detergents, organic solvents, turbidity, trihalomethanes, sludge, sediment, heavy metals, fine flavours and odours, but they leave behind the healthy and good minerals your body needs. They are tested by an independent laboratory according to NSF/ANSI standards 42 and 53. See the laboratory report for more details.
Each Black Berkey element filters up to 11,350 litres of water. Using 2 filters, average usage and proper filter maintenance, you will end up with a lifespan between 5 to 10 years. However, we recommend replacing the Black Berkey filters every 3 years maximum. This is because we live in different times now than we did a few years ago. The number of pollutants has only increased and have become increasingly severe (think of PFAS, for example, or the hefty increase in medicine residues, pesticides, etc.). This has a huge effect on filters, making it better to replace filters a bit earlier.

Preparing for use
The first step is priming the Black Berkey filter elements. It is important that this is done properly, otherwise purifying the water will take a very long time. Received the filters in no time after ordering. Before I received the order, Melanie & Tom sent me an instruction video via email with clear instructions on how to so-called "prime" the filters, this went without a hitch and is a must. Also tested the filters with red food colouring, (this can only be done with red according to the manufacturer) to test if the filters filter the water properly, do their job perfectly.
Also nice that it came with a card with a personal note.
All in all very satisfied with the communication (emails are answered promptly), delivery was very fast and the product is top notch.
