The Big Berkey water filter comes with 2 original Black Berkey filter elements and can be extended to four elements. The unit has a capacity for about 8.5 litres of water, more than enough for most needs. You can do about 10 years with the filters, which means you'll quickly earn back the device compared to other water filters.
The casing is made of polished stainless steel (304), which is the longest lasting stainless steel on the market. Stainless for life.
The box of the Big Berkey water filter includes: 2 stainless steel chambers (top and bottom), 2 Black Berkey filter elements, 1 stainless steel lid, 1 plastic tap (with mounting hardware), 2 wing nuts (for Black Berkey filter elements), 2 washers (for Black Berkey filter elements), 1 priming button (to prime Black Berkey filter elements), 2 blocking plugs (to fill the free holes, which can thus be used to expand the water filter with additional Black Berkey filter elements) and the Priming Starter Kit.
You can easily assemble the Big Berkey in minutes without tools. The first step in preparing a Berkey water filter is priming Black Berkey filter elements. It is important that this is done properly, otherwise purifying the water will take a very long time. This product is a beautiful design jewel in any kitchen and fantastic soft water. Every morning is now a ritual, first water, tap open and plop delicious. Great start to the day and through the day tea coffee delicious and no more lugging water around.

Just a bit cheaper and delivered very quickly. I received an immediate reply to my e-mail enquiry and the action that was not available I was still allowed to use if I wanted and was given a good offer.
Recommended to watch video on which 10 mistakes not to make with the Berkey, as I had definitely made those and prevent water ballet among other things. the website has links to videos on how to install it, so that too went very smoothly.

'- The reason I chose the Big Berkey format is because, as a single man, it allows me to meet exactly my daily need for filtered fresh tap water without standing still for too long (for me).
I am also sometimes away from home for more than a few hours.
- It may be said you do indeed taste that the water has been filtered.
- Furthermore, I want to stress that your primary reason for wanting a Berkey should not be because you want lime-free or even lime-poor water for tea and/or coffee.
Then you really will be cheated.
- Before the Berkey, I used Brita filters and had shiny white mugs for 3 weeks.
Now immediately have brown deposits.
I don't blame this on the Berkey because I knew this in advance.
That's why I still keep a Brita type jug on standby specifically for my tea (the jug is glass instead of plastic though btw)
I also just fill this one with water coming from the Berkey.
- As for monthly maintenance ...
Once a month (when I replace my Brita filter) I give the lower Berkey reservoir section a good go with vinegar and when really necessary (it's not necessarily necessary I read everywhere) the upper section.
- In my case, my stainless steel tap turned out to be unsound.
I contacted Tom about this and it was resolved quickly and flawlessly.
The replacement tap works smoothly.
- I myself did not opt for the sight glass tap because with the help of a measuring cup and some practice I manage to keep a precise view of the contents.
- Oh and not unimportantly I only use one filter instead of two filters at once.
Since I refill in a timely manner and if using alone I don't need too much water at once, I can get by just fine with one filter.
Note! I deliberately bought a spare parts bag with this in mind because the Berkey only comes with 2 filter sealing elements as standard.
Indeed, one assumes with Berkey that you install both filters and not just one like me!
- Last but not least, priming the filters (making the water permeable so to speak) is a drama with many taps.
Water splashes all over so a primer set is highly recommended in my opinion! Perhaps a must for those who want to keep it as dry as possible.

We are very happy with the water filter. The water tastes much better. We drink a lot of tea which also tastes better now. And a nice feeling that hey are healthier. We hesitated for a long time about the purchase and the options, but we were super well advised by Melanie and Tom. The delivery was fast. So I would definitely choose this company again.
After comparing different water filters, I ended up with the Berkey water filter. It purifies the water incredibly well and in terms of price, it is also the best option. The tapped water tastes great, filter is easy to refill with water. We also ordered the tap with sight glass. This is certainly handy so you can see exactly how much water is left in the reservoir and how much you can refill. This tap also sticks out a bit further, making it easier to fill my kettle. The service from Melanie and Tom is also perfect. The tap was faulty and they replaced it neatly and quickly. Thank you for that.
