How the AquaPure pesticide cleaner works

The AquaPure uses plain tap water and a small amount of (Celtic) salt to create a powerful cleaning solution that removes pesticides, bacteria and other contaminants. The solution attacks the pollutants on your fruit and vegetables and decomposes the molecules so they can be easily rinsed off with water.

Electrolysis
Electrolysis is the process of using an electric current to produce a chemical change. An electric current is produced by the movement of electrons or ions.

How does the AquaPure use electrolysis?
The AquaPure electrolyzes water (H2O) containing some sodium chloride (salt, also known as NaCI).
The process gives: 2NaCl + 2H2O → 2NaOH + H2 + Cl2 (electrolysis). This means that two useful compounds are generated: chlorine (CI2, a strong oxidising agent and widely used disinfectant) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH).

NaOH and H2 are produced at the cathode and Cl2 at the anode. (The two poles you see when opening the lid of the AquaPure).

In addition, sodium hypochlorite (solution made by reacting chlorine with a sodium hydroxide solution) appears as a product of the following reaction:
2NaOH + Cl2 → NaOCl + H2O + NaCl
Which means sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI, also a strong oxidiser and disinfectant) is generated.
Both chlorine and sodium hypochlorite attack and decompose pesticide molecules.

Why does electrolysis remove bacteria and pesticides from products?
Both Cl2 and NaOCl are strong oxidising agents that attack bacteria and break down pesticide molecules.

Why is salt needed - and how does it work?
Salt is sodium chloride. The salt solution contains sodium and chloride ions (Na+ and Cl-), necessary for electrical conductivity. As indicated above, the chloride ions also help create chlorine (Cl2), a strong oxidant and disinfectant.

How do you use the AquaPure?

Step 1
Use the micro-USB cable provided with magnetic connector to charging your AquaPure. The LED indicator stops flashing when fully charged. Once fully charged, it can be used for up to 30 cycles before recharging again.

Step 2
Fill a container with room-temperature water and add a pinch of sweet (1/8 teaspoon is enough), stir well. Press the button on the side of the appliance and submerge it in water for 5 minutes with your fruit and vegetables. Place the AquaPure in the middle of the tray of water and stir the fruit and vegetables through the tray a few more times. For a large bowl of water with lots of fruit and vegetables, we recommend running 2 or 3 cycles for best results.

Step 3
When the blue light goes out, the cycle is complete and the food is cleaned. Rinse your fruit and vegetables under the tap for a while before enjoying your clean, safe and delicious products!
